Granny's Chocolate Cake

1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup shortening
1/2 cup boiling hot water added to cocoa
1/2 cup cocoa
4 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream sugar and shortening well, add eggs one at a time beating well after each one. Sift dry ingredients. ADD cocoa and water mixture, then vanilla to creamed ingredients. ADD the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk. Pour into a cake pan.
Bake at 350F degrees until done or test with a toothpick

ICING

2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons karo
1 cup milk
1 stick margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix all together and bring to a boil then continue until it cooks low and bubbles a lot. Beating until done. If it gets too thick, add a little milk.
